What to do after scanning

Suggested steps for patient after CT scan with contrast media administration
  1. Drink at least 2 litres of water per day unless has medical reasons not to.
  2. Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions immediately after the scan up to 7 days. For example, itchy bumps or swelling of eyelids or lips.
  3. There is no need for any dietary restrictions.
  4. Patient with Chronic Renal Failure who is also taking Metformin should take the following precautions.
    • Patient with GFR between 30-44 ml/min should stop taking metformin 48 before as well as after the examination.
    • PIf GFR is lower than 30 ml/min (stage 4 - 5 chronic kidney failure), Metformin is prohibited as it can result in further exacerbation of the kidney disease (physician consultation is required before the examination).
Side effects of contrast media for CT scan
  1. Allergic reactions can occur immediately or up to 7 days after the scan. Some symptoms include itchy bumps on skin, swelling of eyelids, lips or throat. Allergies due to contrast media can be considered as uncommon, occurring in 1.4% of patients. More severe side effects include low blood pressure and even cardiac failure, occurring in 0.04% of patients.
  2. Other symptoms include nausea, headache, and muscle pain.These will usually disappear without requiring any medical attention.
  3. Any effects on the kidney is well-mitigated due to the fact AIMC takes extreme precaution in dealing with those at risk of any kidney-related disorders.
  4. 4) Patients scheduled for abdominal CT scan must drink water with or without contrast media / per-rectal administration of water with or without contrast media and might experience nausea or vomiting. These side effects usually disappear within 2-3 days.
