Vision

The Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital is a leading medical research institution in Thailand aiming to promote healthcare education locally and worldwide, and to strengthen its state-of-the-art services, training, and scholarship efforts. Within Ramathibodi's body of pedagogy which includes research, and hands-on experience, Ramathibodi has built a vast amount of connections globally since its inception and has the ambition and commitment to develop more collaborative relationships to enhance its network, outreach, and scholarly efforts for the better of global wellness and healthcare.

 

Campus Overview

Founded in 1965 with the financial support from the Rockefeller Foundation, Ramathibodi Hospital, located in Mahidol University’s Phayathai campus, is comprised of three main buildings serving 5,000 outpatients per day.

 

The main building of the campus primarily provides more than 1,000 beds for the tertiary care of patients in various specialty departments and units.

 

The second building, the Queen Sirikit Medical Center (QSMC), serves as a center for modern research projects. Facility highlights include the Bone Marrow Transplantation Project, the Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center (AIMC), modern operating rooms, and intensive care units.

 

The third building, the Somdech Phra Debaratana Building serves as a service complex providing excellence in healthcare for a high volume of patients each day. The building has well-equipped, modern facilities to assist in delivering high-quality services up to international standards, provided by specialized doctors. Providing up to 350 beds, 16 operating rooms, and 34 intensive care units (22 ICU, 12 NICU), the Somdech Phra Debaratana Building additionally houses service facilities including centers for Stem Cell Transportation, Minimal Invasive Endoscopic Surgery, Elderly Care, Child Development, and Complicated Disease.

 

In December 2017, the Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute (CNMI) was officially opened in Bangplee, Samutprakarn. CNMI’s campus expands throughout 125.73 acres as a brand new and comprehensive medical institute in order to bring new education innovations to produce academic discipline and excellence for the 21st century. CNMI aims to be a leading teaching hospital with programs such as Transformation of Teacher’s Role, Transformation of Students’ Learning, Learning Resource Development by Connecting with Communities, Transformative Education, and Inter-Professional Education (IPE).

Research Excellence

Outstanding Research and Faculty

As part of the effort to promote health consciousness in Thai society through the construction and codification of a body of knowledge, noteworthy research projects conducted by our faculty include:

 

Healthcare Survey of the Thai Population,
by Professor Wichai Aekplakorn, M.D. and his team.
The team has been continuously carrying out detailed surveys in partnership with faculty personnel and various internal and external organizations. This research has enriched the quality of information gathered from the public, allowing for a more systematic planning for national health promotion and the prevention of disease.
Coronary Artery Disease Survey,
by Professor Piyamitr Sritara, M.S., FRCPT, FACP, FRCP, and his team.
The team has conducted continuous studies including the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). This project is a long-term collaboration between EGAT and the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital. Throughout a twenty-year reserch period, a significant body of knowledge of not only coronary artery disease but also other major diseases in Thailand has been generated by Professor Piyamitr, and has influenced disease prevention policy in Thailand.
Principles of HIV Drug Resistance,
by Professor Somneuk Sungkanuparph, M.D., and his team.
Still ongoing, this research project includes extensive studies on appropriate drug allocation for countries with limited resources. Other research topics under this research includide proper treatment of HIV patients, and factors influencing drug responses of the HIV virus.
Medical Genomics,
by Professor Wasun Chantratita, B.Sc., M.Sc. in Microbiology, Ph.D. in Microbiology.
Professor Wasun and his team have applied genetics and genomic examination and analysis to benefit the diagnosis and resolution of various medical issues including HIV infection, drug resistance, and pharmacogenetics of drug complications. Some findings of the study have also been utilized in national policy formation and commerical initiatives.
Stem Cells,
by Professor Suradej Hongeng, M.D., and his team.
Professor Suradej and his team are one of the pioneering groups of researches who focused their study on treatment with hematologic stem cells in Thailand. In cooperation with various organizations, the team has studied in the area of stem cell basic science, which has led to better knowledge and understanding that will ensure more effective and efficient treatments in the future.
Osteoporosis in Thailand,
by Professor Boonsong Ongphiphadhanakul, M.D., and his team.
Continuting on from research from Professor Rajata Rajatanavin, M.D., FRCP, FACP, FACE, FRCP (T), and his team more than twenty years ago, Professor Boonsong helped create a body of knowledge focusing on the impact of Vitamin D in osteoporosis cases from both national and international perspectives. Taking the research results to push for change and formulate new national policies, especially relating to Vitamin D deficiences.

Furthering Education Excellence

The Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital has disseminated medical knowledge and information as an academic service, as well as providing continuing education for medical professionals to promote ongoing personal development. With this, we ensure that our professionals have the corresponding ability and skills to achieve academic excellence in various medical fields. The faculty has also distributed a number of medical textbooks, informational videos, along with many other types of electronic educational media.

 

Rama Channel

The Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital Mahidol University operates Rama Channel, a public broadcasting station that aims to promote healthcare education to the wider public in collaboration with the Thai broadcasting network, True Visions. Rama Channel is the first health education television channel in Thailand dedicated to promote health and wellbeing awareness and disease prevention.

 

Mobile Medical Units

In collaboration with the Office of His Majesty Principal Private Secretary and the Phradabos Foundation, the Mobile Medical Unit provides medical services to people in remote areas, referring patients who need special care from tertiary medical centers, as well as giving suggestions on self-care and disease prevention to people throughout Thailand.
